My Object and Font

I chose the gurney as my object.

A gurney is made up of four wheels, metal that is assembled in a way that is attached to the wheels, and some type of padding to put over the flat wood or metal

metaphors: pain, suffering, aid, death, life...

Guillaume Apollinaire

When researching Appllinaire, I found that he was accused of stealing the Mona Lisa painting along with Picasso. It's funny that this is the case because this picture of him really looks as though he is sneaky.

A quick biography on him:
He was born in Rome, Italy in August of 1880. He died in Paris, France in 1918. He didn't really live a long life but I guess that was just the norm for his era. He died at age 38. Most of his literature is considered French Literature.

While in his twenties, he worked in a bank. This is how he developed his relations with Picasso. Also, this is when he found his love Marie Laurencin. While working at the bank, he published some books-which may be viewed as somewhat pornographic (eww...no offense to guys but how typical).

After he was arrested for the accusation of stealing the Mona Lisa, he decided to enlist in the infantry during World War I. He married shortly after to some woman named Jacqueline Kolb but did not live long much after that because he was suffering war injuries to the head and then passed from the Spanish flu (what a horrible way to die...this is why war is not always good).

Another thing that I found interesting about him is that he was a playwright, poet, and art critic. I'm really surprised that I have not been introduced to his works throughout any of my schooling. Although, his name does sound somewhat familiar. I didn't get a chance to go look at some of his works but I probably will read some of his novels if they are not pornographic (he he he).

Example of his work are as follows:

Although I do not know what this poem is about because I don't know the language, I really like how he formatted the poem because it is an image of the Eiffel Tower. I only wish I knew what it was about (hopefully not anything sexual).

Many other poems from Appollinaire are written in the form of an object. For example, the head of a woman, a tree, etc. Poems written in this form is really unique and interesting because it also offers the reader a visual aid along with the words.

After looking at some of his works, I am quite curious to find the translations for the poems.

ARCH 22A
January 14, 2008

- The human body: objects. If assembled properly, have male or female. All parts make up a whole—for it to become a functioning thing.
- Look at the parts that make a whole. That is what is formed.
- Need to understand how its formed—visually, memories, and experience.
- Majority status quo—something that is there.
- There because it's comfortable. It's easy
- Can an object have two identities?
- Humans duplicative
- What happens when your lover is a robot?
- Investigate
- Connections w/ objects and things but not physical relations like two people. More time with memory and senses. Body parts functionality. Sense: see, hear, feel, taste, smell, and sixth sense.
- What we use senses for has a function and can help relate a part to a memory/image.
- Closer to a human body—object with a person; connection to body and exploring an experience.
- Advertising has sensuality—sex sells, but not in every age range. Body and sensuality has age related value. Way of presenting idea and think of audience.
- Place in some kind of environment which creates experience.
- Outer body experience—physical and virtual environment. Chatting with someone online is virtual—how do you describe it? A park has trees, grass, benches, etc.
- Interact mentally when virtually. Have your history and it blankets you and use mechanisms but can't physically be there. Create an existence out of your own comfort.
- One man theatre when virtual
- Can use senses in park. Tactile environment. Have memories and can create new ones.
- Digital environment—shapes different from shapes in heart.
ASSEMBLAGE!!

Assignment of exploration: Write a series of words adverbs and adjective that describes an environment or place. You cannot use the real-world definition of the environment/place; Park, Bedroom, Street, etc. your words are to be descriptive. A series of spatial words will also be provided for you. Assemble a statement using your words and the spatial words. This is your vision statement and the theme to your assembled object.

environment in time

Words that come to mind about this particular time in my life when my father passed away are: green, white, soft, pale, hard, cold, frightening, blurry, scared, confused, dark, loud...

A loud and muffled voice awoken me in the middle of the night. As I came out of my sleepy trance and was fully awake, I recognized that the muffled screaming was my mother yelling at someone "I'm telling you, my husband is gone!!!" Out of curiosity, I stepped out of my warm and comforting bed to see what all the commotion was about. As I lay my foot on the hard brown tile floor, I could feel the the sharp coldness of the tile strike me as though it were my skin touching a piece of ice. As I reached up to grip the golden brass handle for my bedroom door to peek out, I felt a certain chill up my spine, warning me of the bad things to come if I would step outside my bedroom.

Once I stepped out of my room and into the hallway, I noticed that all of the lights were on in my house except in my room. At this moment I felt as though I were in a motion picture movie and everything was standing still in time for me yet the whole world was moving on. It was as though I saw my mom standing in the living room in her furry comfortable white and pink pajamas with her fuzzy blue slippers against the white background of the wall while on the phone yelling at someone but I could not hear a thing that she was saying. I watched her flailing her arms in the air with frustration as she was holding the black cordless phone in between her right ear and shoulder. And even at this point, I still couldn't comprehend what was going on.

I decided to walk down the hall into my parents room where I found my younger brother fast asleep in his blankets and my very flustered uncle trying to revive my father from whatever trance he was in. It was only minutes later that I found that my father was not in some trance or asleep but he was dead. Although the meaning and understanding of death was not quite clear to me at this age of five, a part of me knew that my father would probably not wake up from whatever state of mind he was in.

My uncle gestured for me to get onto the bed and stay next to my father as he went to assist my mother with the person that she was dealing with on the phone. Though a little afraid and unsure, I jumped onto the warm and comforting bed which my father lay and just watched him for some time. I recall gazing at this face and noticing the paleness of this lips and the stubby facial hairs protruding from his skin that he would normally have shaved off by the time I was up and about and having breakfast with my other siblings on a regular day.

My thoughts about the paleness of his skin were then interrupted by my sister's quiet footsteps and the squeaking of the brown and orange-like rusty hinges of the dark brown door. As she was getting on the bed beside me, I felt the urge to grab my fathers hands. The feeling of his heavy, cold, and rough hands against my baby soft skin was one touch that would last with me for the rest of my life. His heavy cold hand was a physical feeling that I had not experienced before. His whole body was really cold but not so cold that it was as cold as ice. It felt something like the cold tile on the floor on a winters night only a few degrees warmer. At the time, the heaviness of his arm had felt like a 20 lb steel set of weights.

Moments after, there was some loud banging on the front door of our house and then the men in their blue jump suits and white t-shirts walked in. My mother quickly rushed my sister and I out of their room and into the living room. I ran to sit beside my uncle on our really old and run down brown corduroy-like couch. For some reason, it was then that I started to feel tears stream down my face and it struck me like a set of knives grinding in the middle of my stomach with its warmness against my cold face. Then the paramedics came out with my father's body laying flat on a gurney helplessly with his green sweat pants and a white t-shirt. They continued to examine his body and then proceeded to use a heart fibulator to try to revive him, but he was gone. The man using the fibulator looked up at my mom and announced that he was gone and then recorded the time of death.

The men started to pack their things up and then hauled my father's body on the gurney. Tears started rolling profusely down my face as I ran after them into the darkness of the night and felt nothing but the cold grey concrete beneath my feet as I watched them slowly fade away as they loaded him into their truck. It was then that I realized that my father was not going to come back home and that the only time that I would see him again would be through my memories of him.

**As I reread my passage, I found that the essenctial words that helped convey the images throughout my memory of my father passing away are: cold, white, green, hard, loud, heavy, pale, rough, foggy...**

purpose in architecture

My interest in architecture was sparked in the 7th grade when I was assigned a "dream house" project for my math class. The assignment was to create your own dream house and calculate the cost of the materials and construction of the project as a whole. Although this was the genesis of my interest in architecture, is not the reason why I want to become an architect.

All my life, I have grown up in the "ghetto" (or the projects), and have been struggling to help my family and I get out the situation that we are in. Since I lost my father at age five, my mother has been struggling to take care of me and my other two siblings. Due to the lack of american education, my mom can only limit herself to working as a full time seamstress. This resulted in having to live in areas that have cheaper rent due to the market value.

As I was growing up, I attended public schools that had a high drop out rate. The schools were also in areas that had a high crime rate also. Many students in my neighborhood and my classmates from school tended to stray away from academics and found themselves participating in activities that were self-destructive or illegal.

Despite of my surroundings, I was able to stay away from the peer pressure and focus on eduacation and participate in positive activities so that I could be able to attend a university and make something of myself.

As I reached my senior year in high school, I participated in a program called A.C.E. Mentor where I was introduced to a firm named Chong & Partners. I grew very fond of this firm because of their work was not focused on commercialized projects but on community based projects. This really interested me because I have always believed that there are not enough places to have schools, outreach programs, recreational centers, or community based centers. I found that Chong & Partners worked on projects such as the Academy of Science, the I-Hotel, and some other projects that in many ways impacted the community.

I feel that architects really shape and mold the society through their designs and ideas. And this is really important to me because I grew up in a really bad area where there weren't too many centers for the youth or programs for the youth to participate in and the crime rate was extremely high. In an ideal world, I would like to see my peers from my neighborhood succeed and do well in life and I feel that one thing that may help is the molding of the quality of the neighborhoods.

However little or big a difference I can make, if and when I make it as an architect, I know that my goal is to try to make some affect on the poorer communities here in San Francisco.
